Apple fans looking to purchase a new iPhone can now get the iPhone 5 for just $98, as Walmart has started a new deal.
As Apple is expected to unveil its next-generation iPhone 5S and the much-rumored budget iPhone 5C at an event reportedly scheduled for Sept. 10, many retailers have started to cut the price of the current-generation iPhone 5. This is a common practice designed to get rid of existing inventory in order to make room for the new generation.
Starting on Saturday, Aug. 31, Walmart has kicked off a new deal that aims to attract more customers to the iPhone, offering the handset for just $98 with a two-year contract with Sprint, Verizon or AT&T. The smartphone was previously available with a $128 price tag on contract.
Interested smartphone shoppers who want to get a new iPhone 5 from Walmart must either be eligible for an upgrade from their carrier, or simply get the handset by signing a new two-year contract with Verizon, Sprint or AT&T. If the iPhone 5 discount is not enough, Walmart is also applying a notable discount to the popular Samsung Galaxy S4 flagship smartphone, offering the handset for $138. AT&T, for instance, sells the Galaxy S4 for $30 more.
Walmart's new price cut for the current-generation iPhone 5 further fuel speculation that Apple is gearing up to launch new iterations soon. While the company has not confirmed the rumored Sept. 10 iPhone event, all signs seem to point in this direction.
Judging by Apple's previous launch schedules, the company should unveil the new iPhones on Sept. 10 and launch them 10 days later, on Sept. 20. That would be a Friday, and Apple usually launches its new iPhone on a Friday to give customers a full weekend to play around with the new device. With retailers now dropping prices for the iPhone 5, the next-generation Apple smartphone should make its debut by the end of September.
Those who are not keen on having the very latest smartphone, however, can now take advantage of Walmart's new offer and get the iPhone 5 for $98 on a two-year contract.
