Motorola is reportedly working on a 6.3-inch phablet, as well as a new Droid Ultra successor that may launch next year.
The company, now owned by Google, has already released a few handsets this year with its new lineup of Droid smartphones for Verizon and the much-touted Moto X. However, it now seems that Motorola is not yet done and has big plans for the future.
The Moto X and the new Verizon Motorola Droid smartphones definitely pack a punch, but Motorola needs to up its game if it wants to remain afloat on today's highly-competitive smartphone market. Rival handset makers are always working on unleashing a slew of top-notch smartphones and the Moto X and Droids alone are not enough to keep Motorola competitive for long.
According to new reports, however, Motorola is already working on some top-end devices to bring to the market. A trusted tipster has taken to Weibo to reveal some new information regarding Motorola's plans, according to GforGames. The publication notes that the source has proven to be "quite accurate" in the past, particularly when it comes to Motorola products. For instance, the tipster has proved to be correct with Moto X rumors and leaks.
The latest leak indicates that Motorola is currently working on a new smartphone dubbed the "Motorola Droid Quantum," which will purportedly launch as the successor to Verizon's Motorola Droid Ultra.
Furthermore, the source also claims that Motorola plans to launch a phablet as well, which would sport a huge 6.3-inch display. The super-sized smartphone is reportedly dubbed the "Motorola Xplay."
While Motorola has not officially announced plans to launch a phablet, it would make sense for the company to move in this direction. Big-screen smartphones have become very popular in the recent past and the trend only seems to be growing. Many device makers such as Samsung, HTC and others are launching devices with increasingly bigger displays and more consumers seem drawn to larger screens.
In terms of the expected launch date for the two purported devices, the tipster claims that the Xplay will make its debut sometime next year. Considering that the current Verizon Motorola Droid lineup is still very recent, the Quantum will likely hit the market sometime in 2014 as well.
