T-Mobile is preparing to launch Apple's new iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display under its "Uncarrier" strategy, offering the slates for $0 down.
Apple has just unveiled its new iPads on Oct. 22 and the tablets are set to make their U.S. debut in November. The fifth-generation iPad is now called iPad Air, as the company renamed it to mirror the fact that it's the thinnest and lightest iPad ever. The second-generation iPad Mini, meanwhile, finally brings the much-awaited Retina display resolution to the compact tablet.
According to Cult of Mac, T-Mobile will not only offer 200MB of free data to iPad Air and iPad Mini owners, but it will also sell the two new iPads for $0 down.
"The carrier has confirmed that customers will be able to purchase a new iPad with no money down and make monthly payments, a similar approach to how some smartphones are sold on the network," Cult of Mac reported.
In terms of those subsequent monthly payments, the new iPad Air will start at $26.25 per month for the 16GB cellular model, while the iPad Mini with Retina display will start at $22.08 per month. T-Mobile's strategy allows customers to make these payments in 24 equal monthly installments. In other words, instead of shelling out $629 for the iPad Air, interested buyers can walk into a T-Mobile store and get the slate for $0 down, spreading out smaller payments over two years.
The equal monthly payments will not change over the two-year period, but this $0 down deal is just an introductory offer. The 32GB iPad Air and the iPad Mini with Retina display will then require a $99 down payment, followed by 24 monthly installments. The 64GB models, meanwhile, will require $199 up front. There are no pricing details currently available for the 128GB models.
T-Mobile has not mentioned how long this introductory deal will be available for, but interested buyers may want to take advantage of it while it lasts. The iPad Air will go on sale on Friday, Nov. 1, while the iPad Mini with Retina display will launch later next month.
