iPad Air, iPad Mini with Retina display to have just 1GB of RAM

Apple's new-generation iPads, the iPad Air and the iPad Mini with Retina display, will reportedly come with only 1GB of RAM on board.

When Apple announced its new fifth-generation iPad, renamed as iPad Air, and the second-generation iPad Mini, which now boasts a Retina display, it detailed plenty of specs but forgot to tackle one tiny little aspect: RAM.

The company made no mention of how much RAM the new iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display will have on board, but an Apple customer service representative shed some light on the mystery.

The iPhone 5S came with 1GB of RAM and an Apple 64-bit A7 processor, as well as an M7 coprocessor, the same ones found in the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display. As it turns out, the new Apple tablets will come with the same amount of RAM as well, despite the fact that rivals are stepping up in this department.

While Apple did not officially confirm this information, Chinese tech site CTechCN has posted a screenshot of a discussion with an Apple customer care rep. When asked about the amount of RAM in the new Apple tablets, the representative said that both the iPad Air and the iPad Mini with Retina display will come with 1GB of RAM.

The fifth-generation iPad has been renamed as the iPad Air because it is the thinnest and lightest iPad so far, and the lightest tablet in the world, according to Apple. The slate comes in both Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + Cellular models, with prices starting at $499. In terms of internal storage, the tablet will be available in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB configurations when it launches on Nov. 1.

The second-generation iPad Mini, meanwhile, comes with a 7.9-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and will be available in the same 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB internal storage configurations. This model will also be available in Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions. The new iPad Mini with Retina display will have a $399 starting price and will make its commercial debut later in November, with no specific launch date available at this point.
