Google Glass prescription lenses launching in early 2014

Alexandra Burlacu

Google Glass is not commercially available just yet, but one company promised to provide special prescription lenses for the device in early 2014.

The controversial Google Glass eyewear has raised numerous questions since it became public knowledge. As expected, one of those questions referred to how people could use Google Glass if they already needed to wear prescription glasses. Would Google create a special edition with prescription Google Glass eyewear? Would users just put Google Glass on top of their normal glasses? (the mere thought of it is uncomfortable)

Despite lots of questions, controversies and skepticism, Google Glass continues to improve and is shaping up to be a great hit when it makes its official debut next year. To get a piece of the pie, a New York-based company wants to make special prescription lenses for the gadget.

Rochester Optical has promised to offer a special prescription lens add-on for Google Glass. The add-on would become available early next year. Moreover, the company announced that Tim Moore, one of the first Glass Explorers, will be a part of its prescription-lens Glass project. On his Google+ page, Moore said that these lenses will become available for purchase in early 2014. Mashable contacted Moore and learned a few more details.

According to Mashable, Moore said the special prescription lenses for Google Glass will not cost more than standard prescription lenses. Interested buyers will be able to access a website, enter their prescription information and choose a color to match their existing device. Rochester Optical will then ship the order within two business days.

"The arm mount will fit Google Glass perfectly, and it will be available in a number of colors that will match Glass colors," explained Moore.

It is, however, worth mentioning that this project is all on Rochester Optical. While some may take the company's early 2014 launch as a sign of Google's own launch plans for Google Glass, Moore highlighted that Google is in no way involved in this project.

In other words, we know that an option for Google Glass with prescription lenses will be available, but it remains unclear just when the gadget will finally make its commercial debut to the general public. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more.
