Acer has revamped its C720 Chromebook, launching a new $299.99 Acer720P model with touch capabilities and a far lower price than Google's Pixel Chromebook.
The new Acer C720P aims to offer a budget-friendly alternative to Google's Pixel Chromebook, which was the only one to come with a touchscreen. Acer's new offering now sports a 11.6-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 and packs Intel's Celeron 2955U Haswell processor under the hood.
"Our new touchscreen C720P gives customers an intuitive way to browse sites online, enjoy apps, and do more with the Chromebook," Acer CTO Arif Maskatia touted in the press release on Tuesday, Nov. 26. "The Acer C720 Chromebook line has been praised for its performance and battery life, and this new touchscreen model allows us to address the needs of an even wider range of customers with exciting new capabilities. We're certain many holiday shoppers will jump at the chance to get a touchscreen Chromebook for just $299.99."
The new Acer C720P Chromebook features 32GB of SSD storage, as well as 100GB of Google Drive storage space available for two years. Other specs include 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, an HD webcam, dual stereo speakers, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, and an HDMI port for connecting external TVs and displays. The device weighs in at 2.98 pounds and measures 0.78 inches in thickness. Boot time is pinned at as little as 7 seconds.
According to Acer, the new C720P should provide up to 7.5 hours of battery life, a claim that proved to be accurate on the original C720 due to Intel's Haswell chip architecture. Acer is also offering 12 GoGo Inflight passes with the C720P so users could get online while airborne. These passes have an estimated value of $150 and are good for two years after the Chromebook purchase, usable on continental U.S. flights or participating airlines.
Other than Google's Pixel Chromebook, Acer's C720P is the only Chromebook to offer touch capabilities. The big difference between the two lies not only in specifications, but also in pricing: while the Pixel has a steep $1,299 price tag, Acer's offering will cost just $299.99 when it launches in early December.
As any other Chromebook, the new Acer C720P uses Google's Chrome OS as its operating system, which puts documents and media online instead of locally. For some this is a big advantage, but others may consider it a drawback.
Acer did not offer an exact launch date for now, but said that its C720P Chromebook will become available in several configurations in early December at Amazon's online store, Best Buy and the Acer Store.
