Google has added the first tablet to its Google Play edition lineup of devices, welcoming the LG G Pad 8.3.
Just recently rumors surfaced about an LG V510 device, which was expected to launch as the much-speculated Nexus 8, a new tablet based on the LG G Pad 8.3. There was no confirmation, but the similarity in model numbers (the G Pad 8.3 had model number V500) hinted in this direction.
As it turns out, that LG V510 model number was actually for the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play edition, which will ship with a quad-core processor, Android 4.4 KitKat and more goodies, sporting a $349.99 price tag.
Google updated its Google Play store on Tuesday, Dec. 10, welcoming the LG G Pad 8.3 as its very first Google Play Edition (GPE) tablet. There's not much different from the original tablet, but the GPE model runs a stock version of Android 4.4 KitKat that's stripped of any LG software customizations, as expected with a GPE device.
The tablet sports an 8.3-inch full HD IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and a pixel density of 273 pixels per inch (ppi), with very slim bezels. Under the hood, the LG G Pad 8.3 packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz and paired with 2GB of RAM. In terms of design, the slate boasts an elegant brushed aluminum case that adds a premium feel to it. The tablet features a 4,600 mAh battery that should provide decent battery life.
The LG G Pad 8.3 comes with 16GB of internal storage capacity and a microSD card slot for additional memory of up to 64GB. The tablet further packs an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front shooter. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.
The LG G Pad 8.3 GPE model is now available from the Google Play store for $349.99. The tablet appears as "in stock" at the time of writing, listed as leaving the warehouse in 1 - 2 business days. For a limited time, Google is also throwing in free shipping with the order.
