Beggars may not get to be choosers, but muggers sure are getting picky. One assailant tried to mug a guy, but when he saw a flip phone he gave it back.
In an era of advanced technology and high-end smartphones, muggers seem to no longer settle for whatever they find. The latest reported robbery in Central Park in 2013 is the 13th, but it doesn't seem to have brought bad luck for the guy being mugged at gun point.
A 25-year-old Brooklyn resident named Kevin Cook was walking with a friend in the lower part of the park at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. Two men approached Cook and one of them held a gun, which he pointed at the victim. When Cook handed over his flip phone, however, the gun-toting mugger was so disappointed that he handed it back.
"Once he saw my phone, he looked at it like, 'What the f-k is this?' and gave it back to me," said Cook, as cited by the NY Post. "It's like a 3-year-old generation Windows phone, added Cook. "I guess he didn't think he could get anything for it. It's kind of humorous."
Truth be told, the idea of being mugged at gun-point is anything but humorous, but seeing the mugger all disappointed with his "catch" and handing your phone back is a bit funny.
According to NY Post, the gunman was wearing a dark-green winter coat and blue jeans. His accomplice, meanwhile, had long black hair in a ponytail. Both assailants fled the scene before the police could catch up to them, but at least Cook and his friend were unharmed and un-robbed.
As previously mentioned, this incident marks the 13th reported robbery in Central Park in 2013. The previous year saw the same number of reported muggings in Central Park.
In conclusion, it might be safer not to walk in Central Park at night, especially not alone. If you do venture to do so, however, it might come in handy to have something less appealing to robbers, such as a flip phone. Muggers have higher standards now, or at least this gunman has.
