The Lenovo ThinkPad 8 tablet unveiled back at CES 2014 has now officially gone on sale sporting a $429 price tag on the company's website.
In a tough and increasingly competitive tablet market, Lenovo is expanding its portfolio with the official launch of its ThinkPad 8 tablet that comes with 64GB of eMMC internal storage capacity.
The tablet sports an 8.3-inch wide-view display that delivers 25 percent more viewing area than similar tablets in its category, touts Lenovo. The display's In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology, meanwhile, delivers vivid and vibrant colors and nearly 180-degree viewing angles. Under the hood, the new Lenovo ThinkPad 8 packs an Intel Atom Z3770 processor with 2MB Cache and a clock speed of up to 2.39GHz, coupled with 2GB PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM and an Intel HD graphics processing units (GPU).
Other specs include an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front shooter, and a 20.5 Whr battery that will reportedly provide up to eight hours of battery life on a single charge. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, and the tablet also supports Wi-Fi + 3G/4G in some versions, if required.
"This 8.3" multimode tablet features the best offerings from Lenovo, Microsoft, and Intel combined into one productive, mobile, secure device with faster graphics and three modes: Tablet, Desktop, and Tent," reads the description on Lenovo's product page for the ThinkPad 8 tablet.
While the new Lenovo ThinkPad 8 tablet is currently available for a $429 starting price, the company is also expected to offer a more affordable 32GB model priced at $399 sometime in the future. In addition to this 32GB version, Lenovo is also expected to launch a higher-capacity 128GB model, which would of course come at a higher price. Both of these expected models will reportedly feature a microSD card slot for additional storage.
Lenovo has also designed a special docking station for its new ThinkPad 8 tablet, which will allow users to easily connect a full-size keyboard, mouse, and display if they so prefer.
As expected, the Lenovo ThinkPad 8 comes with Microsoft's latest Windows 8.1 OS on board, complete with Office Home & Student 2013 pre-loaded. The company notes, however, that this is not applicable to models running Windows 8.1 Pro.
