Just a few days ago we heard whispers that HTC was busy working on a high-end Nexus tablet, and a new report now claims it is the Google Nexus 10.
Google refreshed its Nexus lineup in 2013 with a new ASUS-made Nexus 7 tablet and an LG-made Nexus 5 smartphone. The Samsung-made Nexus 10 that debuted in 2012 never got its successor, but it now seems that a new-generation 10-inch Nexus tablet is on its way.
There are also rumors of an 8-inch Nexus tablet in the works, but ASUS will reportedly be responsible for that tablet as well. With the purported Nexus 8 apparently out of the question, it seems that HTC's high-end tablet plans are for the next-generation Nexus 10.
After all sorts of rumors and speculation regarding the successor to the 2012 Nexus 10, a new report now claims that it will come from HTC, but it doesn't give any additional details.
The news comes from a DigiTimes report, so it is advisable to take it with a grain of salt. The publication cites unnamed "industry sources," but it has often proved to be hit-and-miss with its leaks in the past.
According to DigiTimes, Google approached HTC as a potential manufacturer for the original Nexus 7 back in 2012, but HTC turned down the job. Google reportedly went looking for another partner and ended up with ASUS, which made both the first- and second-generation Nexus 7.
With ASUS now rumored to be working on the Nexus 8 as well, it seems that it has become the preferred partner for Google's small-sized tablets. HTC will allegedly go bigger and make the 10-inch Nexus tablet, but it remains to be seen whether it can turn it into a successful device. Both the 2012 and the 2013 Nexus 7 tablets have proved to be widely successful, but the original Nexus 10 didn't enjoy that same popularity.
Moreover, HTC is already facing disappointing profit margins despite its notable efforts, and the last thing it needs is another failure with a Google tablet. It's all based purely on speculation at this point, however, so don't hold your breath for an HTC Nexus 10 tablet. Google has yet to confirm plans for a new Nexus 10, and DigiTimes isn't exactly the most reliable source out there.
