The nominees for the 89th Academy Awards were announced in Hollywood on Tuesday morning. "La La Land" has taken the lead garnering 14 nominations -- making it the third for the most in Academy Award history.

The modern musical romance will be the one to beat, tying the record previously set by "All About Eve" and "Titanic". It is also one of the nine films for the Best Picture award with its lead stars Ryan Gosling for Best Actor and Emma Stone for Best Actress award, according to Los Angeles Times.

"La La Land" was nominated for Best Directing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Achievement in Film Editing, Achievement in Production Design, and Best Costume Design. The film was also nominated for Achievement in Sound Editing, two nominations for Best Original Song -- "Audition" and "City Of Stars," Achievement in Sound Mixing and Best Original Screenplay .

2017 Oscars Schedule

The films with most nominations included "Arrival" and "Moonlight" with eight each, "Lion," "Hacksaw Ridge" and "Manchester by the Sea" with six each. The Oscar Awards has evolved with the passage of time. The number of categories has gone up to quite an extent and some removed, like the Special Achievement Award that run only from 1972 to 1995.

The 89th Academy Awards will be broadcast 26th February at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and will air live at 5:30 p.m. PT. Jimmy Kimmel, anchor of ABC's late-night programming block, will host.

Celebrating Black Actors At Oscars 2017

In an exact contrast to the previous two years, when the academy put forward all-white rosters of acting nominees, electors chose the biggest number of black candidates ever. Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali each got a thumbs up for their supporting work in "Moonlight," a poetic drama of a young black man in Miami.

Octavia Spencer for "Hidden Figures" and Viola Davis for "Fences" were also selected for supporting actress. Joining Ms. Negga in the lead categories was Mr. Washington of "Fences," an adaptation of August Wilson's classic play about black life in 1950s Pittsburgh, shares The New York Times.

Public pressure may have been an element in the outcome on 2017 Oscar Awards nominations roster. However, the results virtually assuredly have more to do with the vagaries of moviemaking -- a full account of high-quality movies with diverse casts that coalesced in the past year.
