'Luke Cage' Gets A New Ongoing Series From Marvel

It looks like "Luke Cage" fans won't have to wait long for more of the superhuman and unbreakable hero. Recent reports have revealed that Luke Cage will soon star in a solo ongoing series from Marvel.

According to CBR, Marvel's "Luke Cage" solo ongoing series will be released in May. The series will be written by David Walker ("Power Man & Iron Fist") and drawn by Nelson Blake II ("The Magdalena").

CBR interviewed Walker about "his plans for the series." The interview also tackled the writer's ordeal of balancing the expectations of both old fans of the "Luke Cage" comics and the new fans of the Netflix show.

During the interview, it was revealed that Walker's "Power Man & Iron Fist" will end in April, just in time for "Luke Cage's" release the following month.  The writer shared that while he is sad that the Danny Rand and Luke Cage's adventures together will soon end, he is also excited to start writing for Cage's solo ongoing series.

CBR asked Walker about what his "sense of what a "Luke Cage" solo book needs to be" is, and the writer replied that with the upcoming comic book series, he is "trying to build off the shoulders of everything that has come before." Luke will be similar to his portrayal in "Power Man & Iron Fist," but the character will be "wiser." The superhero will still be "very street-smart, but he's also a father, a husband, and he's been through a lot more."

Walker said that he will be "writing him in a much more contemplative way. He's the sort of person who'd like to figure out how to get out of a bad spot without having to resort to just throwing punches. It always seems like he has to throw punches, though, before he can figure out how to get out of a bad situation."

While the Netflix show hasn't been a direct influence on Walker, he admits that "Marvel's Luke Cage" did give him "a lot of ideas and ways [about how] Luke could be handled." He adds that these thoughts "were in conjunction with ideas" that the writer has already been developing.

However, Netflix shows featuring Marvel characters are both a "blessing" and a "curse," per i09. While they do encourage those new to comics to start reading up on the featured superheroes, it is rather intimidating to choose where to start a series, especially those that are mid-run. New "Luke Cage" fans will feel more at ease since they can join along as the solo ongoing series starts in May.
