Samsung UK just announced pricing details for the new Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch, and the devices are anything but cheap.
Samsung's new-generation Galaxy Note 3 phablet and its first-ever smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, were both among the most highly-anticipated devices of this year and nobody expected them to be dirt cheap. The prices for the UK, however, seem downright scandalous.
The new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is listed with a whopping £649 price tag (about $1,015), while the Galaxy Gear smartwatch will set you back £299 (roughly $467). In an attempt of generosity, Samsung is also offering a bundle of the two devices, which would be available for a £848 grand total ($1,325). The bundle price would allow for savings of £100.
The Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch are available for pre-order from the Samsung Experience store on a special website. The price for the phablet is for the unlocked model, which is usually quite expensive.
Compared to the retail pricing of the unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in the U.S., however, the UK pricing seems out of this world. Verizon Wireless, for instance, lists the phablet with a full retail price of $699, while AT&T has it at $724. That's still not exactly cheap, but it's nowhere near the stellar price tags for the UK.
Neither Verizon nor AT&T have the Galaxy Gear smartwatch listed separately, but Big Red is offering an off-contract bundle of the two devices priced at $999, indicating that the smartwatch costs somewhere around $300.
In an attempt to soften the blow, Samsung UK is offering a £50 exchange discount to the first 500 customers who walk into one of its Experience Stores at Westfield Stratford and trade in their old device. Customers can trade in any old device, regardless of its condition or whether it's working or not.
Both the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phablet and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch will launch in the UK on Sept. 25, but such steep price tags might limit their success in the region. Third-party retailers may offer more reasonable prices when they launch the new phablet.
