HP 8 1401 Android tablet makes quiet launch, available now for $170
Alexandra BurlacuHP has launched a new Android tablet, although it forgot to issue a press release or give it a proper commercial name.
The company announced a couple of new tablets back at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014, both of which run Microsoft's latest Windows 8.1, but this new slate was not among them. The latest HP tablet comes as the HP 8 1401, and although the company didn't make a proper announcement, it is now available for purchase from HP's website.
The new HP 8 1401 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box and joins the small-sized tablet category, sporting 7.85 IPS display with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution. Under the hood, the slate packs an Allwinner A31 ARM Cortex A7 quad-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM.
The tablet further comes with 16GB of internal storage capacity, as well as a microSD card slot for additional memory. HP offered no details on the maximum microSD capacity the tablet will support, but at least 32GB cards should be allowed, if not 64GB. The slate also comes with 25GB of free lifetime cloud storage from Box.
Other specs of the HP 8 1401 include both front- and rear-facing cameras, with a 2-megapixel shooter on the back and a 0.3-megapixel sensor on the front. The tablet packs a 3,800 mAh battery, which will apparently last for up to seven hours of usage on a single charge.
"It's got the responsiveness that delivers entertainment where you want it. Sleek and smart with technology you can trust, the HP 8 is big on performance, slim in style, and small on price," reads the description on HP's product page for the slate.
As previously mentioned, the tablet popped up without any bells and whistles, but it is now available for purchase from HP's website. The aforementioned specs explain why the tablet is priced so competitively, as the new HP 8 Android tablet costs just $169.99. The slate currently appears as in stock and ready to ship in 24 hours.
It's also worth mentioning that HP currently offers $20 off any inkjet printer priced at $129 or more when purchased with an HP tablet.
