Sony touts PlayStation 4 update: New features & options

Sony's next PlayStation 4 (PS4) update will allow users to save screenshots and videos to USB and will also support HDMI video capture to a different device.

To allow for HDMI video capture to a separate device, Sony will finally enable users to turn off the High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) option. Sony promised back in November that it will offer an HDCP off option, and it is now making good on its word. The PS4 only outputs to HDMI, and with the HDCP on users can only capture video using the share button on the console's controller, and then stream it over Twitch or upload it to social media. The upcoming update will also enhance the PS4's Twitch streaming services.

"Here at Sony, we listen closely to your comments and requests, which are weighed heavily when looking at the future of our platforms. Since PlayStation 4 launched, we've heard a lot of great feedback from you about what you like with the platform and what you'd like to see us work on," said Sony's Scott McCarty, SCEA Director of Product Planning & Software Innovation.

"I'm happy to report that, as a direct result of your feedback, we'll soon be bringing some of your most-requested features to PS4 with a system software update in the coming weeks. These features and additions will help make your PS4 even more socially connected by further enabling you to customize your most epic gaming moments and granting even more options to show them to your friends."

The upcoming update will further add a video editor, which will allow users to edit and personalize their clips. Moreover, the aforementioned option to save screenshots and video clips to a USB device will also be accessible through the Share button on the console's controller. For now, the PS4 Share button only allows users to share content on Twitter, Facebook, Twitch, or Ustream.

The next system update will also bring more features to the table, including the option to archive your Twitch broadcasts, or output the broadcasts at a higher 720p resolution. These changes to Twitch will be part of a "separate system update in the future."
