Samsung ATIV Core leaks as the company’s first Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone
Alexandra BurlacuSamsung's first smartphone to rock the latest Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box will reportedly be called the ATIV Core, and some of its specs have already leaked.
Microsoft took the wraps off its brand new Windows Phone 8.1 operating system a couple of days ago at its BUILD 2014 conference. Nokia stood by its side and introduced the first smartphones running the new OS, namely the mid-range Lumia 630 and Lumia 635 and the high-end Lumia 930, which is essentially an international version of the U.S.-bound Nokia Lumia Icon.
Samsung was rumored to make an appearance as well at Microsoft's BUILD conference and introduce its new ATIV SE smartphone with Windows Phone 8.1 on board, but as we got closer to launch it was revealed that this was not the case. Indeed this did not happen, and the Samsung ATIV SE launched with Windows Phone 8 out of the box because the new OS was not available in time for its release next week.
Verizon has already started taking pre-orders for the Samsung ATIV SE for $199.99 on-contract, and the smartphone will get an update to the latest Windows Phone 8.1 later.
Although the new software will not grace the ATIV SE from the very beginning, Samsung is reportedly working on another handset called the Samsung ATIV Core, which will run Windows Phone 8.1 straight out of the box.
The information comes from an exclusive SamMobile report, which also details some of the purported specs of the upcoming Samsung ATIV Core. While the ATIV SE is a high-end smartphone with top-notch specs and features, the ATIV Core will come in the mid-range segment of the market, according to the publication.
The upcoming Samsung ATIV Core will reportedly sport a 4.5-inch HD display with 720p resolution, an 8- or 13-megapixel rear camera, 1GB of RAM, and a 2,100 mAh battery. SamMobile makes no mention of the type of processor the purported smartphone will pack.
It remains also unclear at this point when Samsung will unveil its new ATIV Core, or when the smartphone will go on sale. The earliest confirmed launch of a Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone is currently for the Lumia 630, which will hit commercial availability in May. This means that the Samsung ATIV Core will likely come sometime after that. Considering its mid-range specifications, the purported smartphone is also expected to sport a budget-friendly price tag.
It's all speculation at this point, but we'll keep you in the loop as soon as we hear more about the purported Samsung ATIV Core.
