Samsung launches Galaxy Beam 2 smartphone projector, but is it necessary?
Alexandra BurlacuSamsung seems keen on the idea of offering a projector crammed into a smartphone and the company just launched a new Galaxy Beam 2.
The original Samsung Galaxy Beam aimed to offer a very portable projector so that users will always have it handy. However, the device wasn't a very big success, and other than the projector it was quite mediocre as a smartphone. Despite not managing to attract many buyers, Samsung has nonetheless chosen to launch another iteration.
The new Samsung Galaxy Beam 2 follows the same principle, launching as a hybrid combo between a smartphone and a projector, but it does sport some notable improvements over its predecessor. Its specs are slightly upgraded and its design is now more stylish, but it remains to be seen whether it will make a wider debut. For now, the Samsung Galaxy Beam 2 launched in China and is only available for purchase there.
Nobody expected another Galaxy Beam hybrid considering that the first one was not very successful, but Samsung seems to believe there is room for such a device on the market. Then again, Samsung has never been too shy about flooding the market with all sorts of devices, whether they were needed or not. The Galaxy Beam 2 definitely offers some upgrades compared to its predecessor, but is it enough to justify its presence on the market?
As expected, the device is a low- to mid-range smartphone with nothing very special to offer in terms of specifications. It packs a quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, a 4.66-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480, and runs the older Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Samsung did not specify the amount of RAM.
The projector is the main attraction here, and this time Samsung upgraded it to a WVGA resolution. The metallic sheen also makes everything look better now compared to what the original Galaxy Beam brought to the table.
Samsung has yet to offer any pricing details for its new Galaxy Beam 2, or mention whether the device will make it in other markets outside of China as well. If you're interested in this device, head over to Samsung's website at this link to learn more.
