Nokia X OTA software update rolling out now, adds new features & enhancements
Alexandra BurlacuNokia has started to roll out a software update for its much-touted Nokia X family of devices, adding some neat new features and improvements.
The Nokia X lineup was very highly anticipated, with numerous fans worldwide eager to see an Android smartphone from Nokia. When news broke out that Microsoft was acquiring the Finnish company, many thought that this Android project would be dropped, but Nokia stuck to its plans.
The company unleashed its very first Android-based handsets as part of its new Nokia X family of smartphones, and while they're not very high-end, they do offer some good functionality. The Nokia X handsets don't run Android per se, but they are based on the Android Open Source Program (AOSP), which means that they're compatible with Android apps but don't depend on Google services. Instead, the handsets work with Microsoft/Nokia services and third-party Android apps.
Nokia is now rolling out an update over the air (OTA) for its Nokia X family of devices, bringing the software version to 1.1.2.2 and enriching the experience with a few performance tweaks and enhancements.
The new software version adds Microsoft One Drive, now enabling Nokia X users to take full advantage of Microsoft's popular cloud storage service. Moreover, Nokia is also throwing in a Contact Transfer app, designed to facilitate the upgrade to a Nokia X by allowing users to easily move all their contacts onto the new phone with minimum hassle.
The update will also bring along an improved version of Nokia Store, as well as some neat enhancements to overall stability, performance, and usability. As always with OTA updates, the availability and rollout date may vary and will depend on your network service provider. It may take a few days to reach all devices, but it's coming soon.
It is advisable to use a stable Wi-Fi connection to download and install the update to avoid mobile data costs. You should receive a notification soon alerting you of the update's availability, but if you can't wait you can also manually check for it by accessing Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Check Now. From there on, if the update is ready for your device, just follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
According to Nokia's announcement, the update process should complete in 15-30 minutes. You will not be able to use your phone during the update installation, and you may need to restart it to finish the process.
