Samsung Galaxy Alpha may not be the metal beast you’re waiting for
Alexandra BurlacuThe much-rumored Samsung Galaxy Alpha may not be the metallic beast the world is waiting for after all, if a new report proves to be accurate.
For what seems like ages, Samsung fans have been waiting for the company to lose its love of plastic and release a smartphone with a more premium metal design. It didn't happen with the Galaxy S4, it didn't happen with the Galaxy S5 either, but the rumor mill is still churning in anticipation of a miracle.
Not too long ago, rumors surfaced that Samsung was working on a more premium Galaxy S5 variant that would finally deliver the metal design everyone's dreaming of. That variant was first referred to as the Galaxy S5 Prime, then as the Galaxy F, and later on it was speculated to launch as the Galaxy Alpha.
If the latest information regarding the Galaxy Alpha turns out to be accurate, the smartphone may not be that premium after all. In an exclusive new report, SamMobile reveals a bunch of photos allegedly showing the Galaxy Alpha, along with some purported specs.
According to the publication, the Galaxy Alpha will have some metal in its build, but will not fall too far from the tree. More specifically, the handset will reportedly sport an aluminum frame for the sides, but retain the same perforated faux-leather back cover introduced with the Galaxy S5. As for the overall design, the leaked images seem to show a device reminiscent of the older Galaxy S2, save for the texured pattern and the metal trim.
Judging by the images showing the purported Galaxy Alpha side by side with the current Galaxy S5 flagship (see above), the upcoming model will be notably smaller, but not that premium looking.
When it comes to specifications, SamMobile claims that the Galaxy Alpha will be "somewhat high-end," coming somewhere between the Galaxy S5 flagship and the Galaxy S5 Mini. The Galaxy Alpha will reportedly sport a 4.7-inch screen that's "the same display as the Galaxy SIII's," with the mention that it remains unclear whether that means the same resolution or the screen type.
The report makes no mention of the Galaxy Alpha's processor or RAM, but claims that it will come with 32GB of internal storage capacity and no microSD card support, which would be a bit odd coming from Samsung. The handset will further feature a fingerprint scanner, a nano SIM card slot, and perhaps LTE-A support via the new Exynos ModAP chip.
The 4.7-inch display size indicates that Samsung wants to challenge the rumored 4.7-inch iPhone 6, but these leaked specifications don't really depict an iPhone 6 killer. The Galaxy Alpha is rumored to launch in August, while Apple is expected to take the wraps off its next-generation iPhone in September. Remember that it's all in the rumor state, however, so take this report with a grain of salt.
