Motorola Google Nexus 6 claims bolstered, to launch once Moto is fully under Lenovo
Alexandra BurlacuNews recently broke out that Google's next Nexus smartphone will come from Motorola, and a new report now brings more information on the matter.
As a reminder, Motorola was a Google-owned company for a while, until parting ways earlier this year. Motorola's new parent company is now Lenovo, but it seems that an exciting collaboration is still in the cards with Google.
Just yesterday we reported that Google and Motorola were working on the Nexus 6, which currently goes by codename "Shamu." Motorola did not enter a partnership with Google for a Nexus device while it was still under its wing due to fears that others would see it as an unfair advantage. With Lenovo now taking over the reins of Motorola, however, such woes are no longer the case.
A new report from The Information now claims that Motorola will indeed launch the purported "Shamu" smartphone in collaboration with Google, but it will do so once it's fully tucked into Lenovo's arms.
"Motorola could double phone sales this year, according to internal projections. It's also on track to hit profitability by the middle of next year, after losing $1.2 billion in 2013 alone. The turnaround could help position the combined Lenovo-Motorola as the leading global challenger to Samsung Electronics in selling phones based on Google's Android operating software. It also holds valuable lessons for the many device makers that rely on Android and have struggled to gain ground," reads the report.
"Separately, Motorola is also getting a boost from working on an undisclosed phone-tablet project with Google - the type of initiative which, ironically, it could not pursue as a Google subsidiary due to concerns about favoring the house-owned Android vendor over others."
Motorola will likely be in a perfect position to launch a Nexus smartphone once Android L is ready for prime time. Moreover, Motorola's delay of its Moto 360 smartwatch running Android Wear would make more sense if the reason behind it would be to launch the companion accessory alongside the Nexus 6. On the other hand, it's yet to be confirmed whether Google will indeed launch its next Nexus smartphone/plablet in collaboration with Motorola.
It all remains in the rumor state until some official confirmation from Google and/or Motorola, so take this news with a hefty grain of salt.
