HP’s new Chromebooks promise power and affordability: Specs, price, availability

With so many exciting announcements grabbing the spotlight at the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin, the new HP Chromebooks may not have gotten the attention they deserve.

Nevertheless, the company's refreshed Chromebook line is quite notable. The new Chromebook 11 and Chromebook 14 have received new processors on board and will become available next month in a variety of colors, just in time for the lucrative holiday shopping season.

"With the HP Chromebook running lighting fast Chrome OS, the best of Google is at hand on a colorfully sleek and stylish notebook," touts the company. "Access your favorite websites and Google apps instantly on a beautiful 11 or 14-inch diagonal HD display. Auto-synch your data and stay connected everywhere with built-in optional 3G or 4G connectivity and up to 100GB of Google Drive Storage."

Just like Acer's new Chromebook 13, the new HP Chromebook 14 packs an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor under the hood, while most other Chromebooks use an Intel chip. The powerful Tegra K1 should deliver superior performance and improved battery life, as well as better functionality overall. The chipset consists of a quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU and 192 CUDA cores for graphics. The HP Chromebook 11, meanwhile, still comes with an Intel chip, in the form of the Celeron N2830 dual-core Bay Trail.

Both new HP Chromebooks feature the same display resolution at 1,366 x 768 pixels, which means that the smaller 11-model has a higher pixel density. Other than that, both versions come with 16GB of internal storage capacity, but the larger 14-inch model can grab a higher-capacity 32GB SSD. Options for both notebooks also include 2GB or 4GB of RAM, with one difference between the two models: the Chromebook 14 supports DDR3 up to 1,600MHz, while the Chromebook 11 supports 1,333MHz memory.

In terms of color options, the Chromebook 14 will be available in turquoise blue, silver, orange, or neon green, while the Chromebook 11 will come in turquoise blue or white.

Like most Chromebooks out there, HP's new Chrome OS notebooks will come with budget-friendly price tags. The Chromebook 11 will start shipping on Oct. 5 with a $279.99 starting price, while the Chromebook 14 will hit commercial availability on Oct. 22 with a $299.99 starting price.
