The much-rumored Google Nexus 9 tablet from HTC will reportedly make its debut on Oct. 16, according to the latest leak.
Google has yet to launch a Nexus device this year, but is expected to unveil an HTC Nexus 9 shortly. The company's Nexus 10 has not been as successful as the smaller-screen Nexus 7, but Google nonetheless seems poised to try its luck with another large-screen slate.
The HTC Nexus 9, also codenamed "Volantis" or "Flounder," is one of the most highly anticipated devices of this year and is expected to launch with top-notch specs and features on board. Various reports up to this point have tried to indicate just when the two companies might make the Nexus 9 official.
So far, the general consensus was that the Nexus 9 would make its formal debut on Oct. 9, but the latest leak now suggests otherwise. More specifically, an anonymous tipster told Paul O'Brien of MoDaCo that Google will unveil its next-generation Nexus 9 on Oct. 16, i.e. one week later than initially thought. It remains unclear whether the date was pushed back one week, or whether the initial rumors were wrong. At the same time, there's also a chance that this new leak is inaccurate.
"Anonymous tipster: The HTC Nexus 9 will be launched on 16th October," Paul O'Brien tweeted on Thursday, Sept. 18. "Same source: Announcement rather than launch of the HTC Nexus 9 on 16th October. 8.9" (of course!)," he added in a subsequent tweet.
O'Brien reckons that it remains unclear who the tipster might be. Although he presumes it may be someone who has provided accurate information before, he can't vouch for the validity of this new information.
The general timeline, however, would fall in line with previous launch schedules. Last year, for instance, Google made the Nexus 5 official on Halloween, i.e. on Oct. 31, announcing it in a simple Google+ post, without any launch event; the smartphone went on sale the same day. The company may go down the same road this year and drop the Nexus 9 in a similar manner, but it's all just speculation at this point.
The company is also expected to release a new Nexus smartphone made in collaboration with Motorola. The handset is reportedly codenamed "Shamu" and may launch as the Nexus X, as the Nexus 6 name would pose some copyright issues.
If Google decides to release both the Nexus X and the Nexus 9 at the same time, it may choose to hold an actual event for the unveiling. The company has not sent out any event invites so far, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we hear anything.
