The recently-announced Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone appears to be the current king when it comes to battery life, as a recent test revealed impressive performance.

Today's phones have become far more than simple tools to make calls or exchange text messages. Smartphones have evolved to serve as portable powerhouses, boasting all sorts of top-notch specs and features to help users make the most of their device. All of that high-end functionality, however, takes quite a toll on battery life and smartphones typically don't last for too long on a single charge, especially if the battery has to juice up a massive display.

With the Sony Xperia Z3 things seem to be a bit different, as the smartphone apparently boasts the best battery life in its category. Sony had already boasted that its new flagship will offer two days of battery life, but a new test has now confirmed just how impressive the Xperia Z3's battery really is. The test was performed by the folks over at Phone Arena, who put phones through a tough ordeal using a web-script that simulates typical life usage.

"We are not going to mince words here - Sony is the current king of battery life when it comes to brand-name smartphones. We did our grueling battery benchmark on the Xperia Z3 over the weekend, and it broke all records in its respective category, just as we suspected it would do, given Sony's consistent performance in that department this year," Phone Arena noted in its report on Monday, Sept. 22.

"The phone lasted for nearly nine and a half hours of screen-on time when we ran our tasking battery benchmark, putting it comfortably ahead of any other flagship big-screen phone or phablet we've tested at the moment. This is more than any other flagship we've measured so far - phone or phablet - and even more than the Ascend Mate7, which comes equipped with a whopping 4100 mAh juicer, while the Z3 has an 'only' 3100 mAh piece in a 7.3mm thin waterproof body."

The publication further points out that the Xperia Z3 also scored better than its predecessor in this battery endurance test, and the Xperia Z2 already offered a pretty great battery life. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia Z3 requires a charging time that is "much longer than the average," as it takes nearly four hours to reach a full charge with its stock 850 mA charger.

As a reminder, the Sony Xperia Z3 sports a 5.2-inch display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, among the highlights.

Both the Sony Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact should hit retail in the U.S. very soon, as the smartphones already appear on the company's website. Speaking of the Xperia Z3 Compact, Phone Arena said it is currently re-testing its battery performance, as on the first run it lasted "way longer" than any device it has ever benchmarked, so it wants to make sure its "amazing battery life score" is for real.
