Apple unveils whopping 27-inch Retina 5K iMac: Specs, features, pricing & availability
Alexandra BurlacuApple officially unveiled a new 27-inch iMac with a whopping 5K display, boasting an unbelievable resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels.
The company's all-in-one (AIO) computers have always been impressive, but the latest 27-inch iMac takes it to the next level in a big way. When rumors of a 27-inch iMac with a 5K resolution first started to make rounds, many thought it was pure fantasy and Apple would not pack such a high resolution on such a large display. Nevertheless, those rumors have turned out to be accurate and Apple has officially unveiled its latest iMac masterpiece.
"Apple today unveiled the 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display, featuring the world's highest resolution display with a breathtaking 14.7 million pixels," the company boasted in a press release on Thursday, Oct. 16. "At this amazing resolution, text appears sharper than ever, videos are unbelievably lifelike, and you can see new levels of detail in your photos. With the latest quad-core processors, high-performance graphics, Fusion Drive and Thunderbolt 2, iMac with Retina 5K display is the most powerful iMac ever made - it's the ultimate display combined with the ultimate all-in-one."
"Thirty years after the first Mac changed the world, the new iMac with Retina 5K display running OS X Yosemite is the most insanely great Mac we have ever made," added Philip Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. "With a breathtaking 14.7 million pixel display, faster CPU and graphics, Fusion Drive, and Thunderbolt 2, it's the most beautiful and powerful iMac ever."
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Apple had to develop new components for its 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K in order to make everything work. More specifically, Apple said it had to create a new Timing Controller (TCON), which is designed to tell each pixel what to do and when to do it.
"A single supercharged Apple-designed timing controller (TCON), with four times the bandwidth, drives all 14.7 million pixels," Apple explains.
The panel itself reportedly includes 23 layers, yet it measures just 1.4mm in thinness and packs 14.7 million pixels, while requiring 30 percent less power.
Under the hood, the new iMac seems more than capable to handle whatever task you throw at it. The standard model will come with a 3.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB Fusion Drive, but customers will also be able to customize it to better suit their needs and preferences.
For the first time ever, the iMac can be configured with a 4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.4 GHz. Moreover, each new iMac with Retina 5K comes with AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics and can be configured with AMD Radeon R9 M295X graphics, delivering up to 3.5 teraflops of computing power. According to Apple, the new iMac boasts "the most powerful graphics ever offered on an iMac." Customers will also be able to configure it with up to 32GB of memory, a 3TB Fusion Drive, or up to 1TB PCle-based flash storage. The new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K also comes with two Thunderbolt 2 ports that deliver twice the bandwidth of the previous generation, at 20Gbps each.
The new 27-inch Retina 5K iMac ships with the latest OS X Yosemite and costs $2,499 for the base model, with immediate availability. For more details, check out the company's website at this link.
