Dropbox for iOS gets Touch ID support with latest update – Available now
Alexandra BurlacuPopular file sharing site Dropbox has officially updated its iOS app on Monday, Oct. 20, to support Touch ID functionality for extra security.
With the addition of Touch ID functionality, Dropbox users who have a Touch ID-enabled iOS device will be able to securely access their files by scanning their fingerprint.
Dropbox version 3.5 for iOS rolls out on Monday, Oct. 20, as the first version of the app to support Touch ID since Apple opened up the feature to developers earlier this year.
The new Dropbox for iOS app comes with a number of neat new features, including full optimization for Apple's latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones, in addition to the Touch ID support for easier unlocking. The new version of the app also comes with a much-needed fix for previewing rich format files, as well as the usual stability and performance enhancements that come with an update.
The addition of Touch ID support adds an extra layer of security to Dropbox, and comes shortly after the media reported that the service was hacked and seven million passwords leaked online. Dropbox denied such allegations last week and said it wasn't hacked, promising that all user data is safe. Extra security is welcome nonetheless, and Touch ID aims to offer just that.
To activate Touch ID functionality in Dropbox, all users have to do is launch the app and access the Settings menu and the Passcode section. The updated Dropbox for iOS app is available as a free download from iTunes at this link.
It's worth pointing out that this Touch ID feature will only work on devices running iOS 8, which means that iPhone 5S users will not be able to take advantage of it if they're still running the older iOS 7. In other words, Dropbox works with iOS 7 devices, but it will not support Touch ID unless you upgrade to iOS 8.
As previously mentioned, the new Dropbox for iOS comes with support for the larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and the added layer of security will also benefit those who purchase Apple's latest tablets, as the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 now boast Touch ID fingerprint readers as well.
Previously, Dropbox had added its last major update last month after the release of iOS 8, which brought along a new Notification Center widget, a new Share extension that allows users to open and share files from other apps, as well as the ability to manage shared folders in the app. The new update now takes things to the next level and is available immediately.
