LG G Watch R starts global rollout, hitting Europe first
Alexandra BurlacuThe Android Wear-powered LG G Watch R with a round design is ready to start its global rollout, hitting Europe first, the company has announced.
The LG G Watch R made its debut back in September at the IFA 2014 trade show, and the "R" in its name stands for "round." The company had already released its LG G Watch, which has a rectangular form factor, but the interest the round-shaped Moto 360 stirred prompted LG to launch a round smartwatch as well.
At the time of the unveiling, LG said that its G Watch R would start its global rollout this fall, and now the company is offering more details on the matter.
"LG Electronics (LG) announced today that its newest Android wearable, LG G Watch R, will be available for purchase at retail sites throughout Europe including countries such as France, Italy, Spain and the UK in the beginning of November, followed by key markets in North America, Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) soon after. Customers in select markets will also be able to purchase G Watch R on Google Play in the weeks ahead," reads the press release on Friday, Oct. 24.
As previously mentioned, LG announced its G Watch R after Motorola's Moto 360 garnered a lot of praise for its classical, round form factor as opposed to the rectangular design of most smartwatches out there. LG touted that its new G Watch R boasts a "full-circle P-OLED display," not the "flat tire" roundness of the Moto 360.
"While the original G Watch was designed to be a no-nonsense, pure Android Wear device, the G Watch R was developed with a more aesthetic eye," adds Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "The G Watch R represents LG's commitment to meld form and functionality together in perfect harmony and to create a device that not only looks great but more importantly, offers technology that makes life more convenient."
The LG G Watch R is expected to hit the U.S. toward the middle of next month, if not in end-November. As a reminder, the device sports a fully circular 1.3-inch P-OLED display, a Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 410 mAh battery to keep things up and running. The LG G Watch R also comes with IP67 certification, which means it can withstand being submerged in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
LG will announce additional pricing and availability details locally as the G Watch R rolls out to different markets. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, so stay tuned.
