Apple Watch replica on sale for $27 at CES 2015
Alexandra BurlacuApple has yet to make its first smartwatch commercially available, but a fake Apple Watch was nonetheless on sale at CES 2015.
With wearable technology increasingly gaining momentum, smartwatches are becoming the new must-have for tech enthusiasts. A number of smartwatches are already available on the market and some more are expected to hit commercial availability this year. From the second category, the Apple Watch is one of the most hotly-anticipated wearables of 2015.
While the Apple Watch is not expected hit the market for at least another couple of months, a rip-off of the device has turned up at CES 2015. More specifically, a Chinese company named Hyperdon is selling a fake Apple Watch aptly called the "Smart Watch" for $27, and Mashable's Karissa Bell bought one at CES.
The gadget looks very similar to the Apple Watch, sporting a nearly identical design. Bell managed to pair the Smart Watch with her iPhone 6 and make and receive calls, albeit it took a few attempts before being able to connect the two devices.
"The watch, created by Shenzhen-based Hyperdon is actually called 'Smart Watch,' and it almost looks like the real deal - at least, upon first glance," Bell reports for Mashable.
"The watch's screen only displays when it's turned on, and many of its icons are blatant ripoffs of Apple designs. The pairing process took a few tries, but once connected to my iPhone 6, I was able to make phone calls and play music through the watch. It even vibrates when I get a call."
Considering how popular Apple devices typically are, this news comes as no great surprise. Various companies have copied Apple designs and released replica devices over the years, and this is not the first time a knockoff of an Apple device appears even before the real product hit the market.
This Smart Watch may be the first fake Apple Watch, but there is a strong possibility that it will not be the only one. The real Apple Watch, meanwhile, is expected to make its debut sometime in the first months of this year, but no official release date is available at this point.
