WhatsApp Web desktop version now works with Mozilla Firefox, Opera as well
Alexandra BurlacuWhatsApp Webb has officially expanded its reach, as it is now compatible with the Mozilla Firefox and Opera browsers as well.
For some context, WhatsApp Web launched back in late January as the desktop version of the popular messaging service. This desktop version became an instant hit worldwide, but when it launched it was only compatible with Google's Chrome web browser. WhatsApp promised to make the Web version available for more browsers in the future, and has now kept its promise by extending the courtesy to Firefox and Opera.
"Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device -- this means all of your messages still live on your phone," WhatsApp explained in a blog post when announcing the new desktop version.
Users will be able to enjoy WhatsApp Web on Firefox and Opera in the exact same way as on Chrome, as the process remains unchanged. More specifically, users have to visit https://web.whatsapp.com/ and scan a QR code with their smartphone to start using the desktop version of the app. To scan the QR code from the desktop version, open the mobile app on your smartphone, access the menu and select WhatsApp Web.
Once you've scanned the QR code, you will be able to use WhatsApp on the desktop the same way you would on mobile. This means you can send and receive messages or share photos, videos, and audio, and you will receive notifications just like on mobile. Furthermore, users will also be able to share their location using WhatsApp's integrated mapping features.
It's worth pointing out, however, that in order to enjoy WhatsApp Web on the desktop users must remain connected to the app on mobile as well. The desktop version simply mirrors the app on the smartphone, but will not work independently.
Nevertheless, WhatsApp Web is arguably more convenient for many, and has enjoyed great success since its debut. Wider availability for more browsers will surely make it even more popular, potentially boosting the app's user base even further. We have tested WhatsApp Web on Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, and the service works smoothly and without hiccups on all browsers.
