Nextbit’s Robin: Now on the Kickstarter campaign and why you Should Support it

Jonathan Benito

A new breed of smartphone from Nextbit has recently started on Kickstarter and it's definitely something the tech community should be backing. As we write this piece, the campaign already has 1,264 backers and is nearing its goal of $500,000 literally hours from launch. Why is it such a big deal? Let's look at the Robin's specs.

What sets the Robin apart from the slew of affordable smartphones is its integrated cloud OS. The problem with limited storage is an issue with each new phone model that comes out. Whether it provides you with a built in memory or allow an external microSD, eventually, memory becomes an issue. The Robin promises to NEVER run out of storage.

Technically speaking, the memory is not infinite. The smartphone merely takes note of your storage habits and offloads files that you don't normally access to a cloud storage. The Nexbit software, that runs on top of the Android, allows your phone to automatically store files to the cloud when you don't access it for a while and will also automatically download them for recall once you tap on a greyed out file that was uploaded  earlier.

So how is this innovative from the current technology? Nexbit's Robin claims to have an edge because it seamlessly backs up your unused files when ideal conditions are met. Ideal being when there's a strong internet connection and your phone is plugged to a power source. The Robin also frees up space on demand so you don't have to forcibly delete a file when you don't have enough space when you're shutterbug instincts hit you.

Here's a look at the specs:

Snapdragon 808 processor

32GB offline and 100GB online storage

3GB RAM

4.0 LE Bluetooth and 1 nano sim slot

5 MP front camera; 13 MP face detection, autofocus, dual tone flash

Dual speakers and amplifiers

USB Type C connector

LTE (class 4) and 3G, Wifi A/B/G/N/AC

The Robin will have a retail price of somewhere between $300-$400 depending on how you purchased it. With the specs mentioned, it's a very competitive phone with high end marks. Supporting its Kickstarter campaign gets you a phone at $349 since the first 1000 supporter has already bagged the $299 deal. It's not too late to jump on the bandwagon, visit the page here.
