Samsung’s VR Headset to be Released at $99, Hulu Jumps Onboard with Apps Ready

Virtual Reality that is available for the masses is no longer a sci-fi story. This November, a new Samsung VR headset will retail at just $99 US. Oculus and Samsung teamed up to produce this low cost alternative to virtual headsets that works similarly to Google Cardboard, without the annoying latency issues. The Oculus Rift, the VR headset partnered with Microsoft, is set to release on the first quarter of 2016 with a whopping $1500 US price tag.

Along with the release of Samsung's affordable VR headset is Hulu's virtual reality app. Tim Connolly, head of distribution, confirmed with CNET that their new app is ready for the device. Hulu is one of the major streaming companies, along with Netflix and YouTube, to support VR content development. Hulu has big plans that include a virtual reality short film called "The Big One", created by YouTube's Freddie Wong, alongside an original Hulu series.

Hulu also plans to offer 2D video catalogs with immersive environment, enabling the users to watch classic movies and series as if they were actually there. Hulu will obviously rely on its vast wealth of content from its TV giant owners: Disney, 21st Century Fox and Comcast. Hulu's projects will also be available in the upcoming Oculus Rift.

Despite the hype of affordable VR headsets, the Oculus Rift is still considered the next step in virtual reality and gaming. In its recent partnership with Microsoft, the software giant promises to port existing Xbox games to the VR headset, making it the next evolutionary step from consoles. Whether affordable headsets like Google Cardboard and Samsung's VR headset will thrive with this hardware behemoth is another question.

Most gamers believe that the content heavy Oculus Rift will earn praises for hardcore gaming fans, whereas headsets that make use of your smartphone would be best left for casual games and streaming on the go. Either way, virtual reality will be an exciting addition to any tech application and consumers will be able to sample some of the industry's first apps on November. Needless to say, we're excited too.
