Qualcomm And QiKu Become Partners With A 3G/4G Patent License Deal

Mary Cris Balancio

For some time now, Qualcomm Inc. has been one of the biggest names in the chipset industry. The company is also one of those suppliers smartphone manufacturers like to run to. However, the recent months have not been good to it as it has been involved in conflicts with regulators and in disputes with several smartphone companies in China over its licensing business.

But all seem to be not as bleak as it seems for the chipset company has just signed a Chinese Patent License Agreement (CPLA) with the QiKu Internet Network Scientific Co., Ltd. This comes after it has also signed a 3G/4G patent licensing deal with another Chinese company known for manufacturing smartphones, Xiaomi Inc.

QiKu is known to be born out of two companies, Coolpad Group Ltd. and Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd.. The former is known to be a telecommunication equipment manufacturer, while the latter is a global Internet giant.

With the signing of the agreement, the chipset manufacturer has granted Qiku a royalty-based license that gives it the right to develop devices that are integrated with Qualcomm's 3G and 4G technology and to manufacture them and sell them. The royalties that QiKu is paying for the chipset manufacturer's patent are based on what Qualcomm has submitted to China's National Reform and Development Commission (NRDC).

So what does this mean for Qualcomm and QiKu? The sealed deal shows that Qualcomm is aiming to support the entry of QiKu into China with its 3G/4G handheld devices. It also shows that the company will aid QiKu in delivering the best performance and reliability to its customers. This new partnership deal could also help Qualcomm with its struggles with China and might even help solve its current issues involving its licensing patent business.

Aside from that, it could also help the company through the royalties the deal brings in and help strengthen its hold in the Chinese markets. With these, one can only hope that the struggles the chipset maker faces will lessen and/or finally get resolved.
