Lenovo Chief Says Google Will Weasel Its Way To China This Year

Mary Cris Balancio

Last year, we learned about Google's plan to be back into the good graces of China and have its apps and services back in the country. So far, the progress is slow and almost next to nonexistent. However, we learn today that it has found an ally in Chinese tech company Lenovo, which promises that Google's Play Services will be back in the country within this year.

Lenovo's Head Chen Xudong said that Google will finally be bringing its services back to China and that the tech giant is already back on track. The news comes after the company has been trying to make it back in China after facing strong opposition from the government until it is almost banned from the country.

It is rather known that although Google's Android has been a dominant smartphone platform in China, Google's existence has been very limited. Bringing Play Services into the country will be an effort for the tech giant to help Google gain its momentum or at least get its presence back into the Chinese community.

The news didn't come as a surprise to some as there have already been earlier reports released last year about Google creating a special version of its Google Play Store and services. According to those special reports, a special or localised version of the Play Store and some of their services were in the works in order to comply with the strict Internet filtering laws of China.

Aside from the expected launching of Google Play Services in the country, Engineering Director for Android David Singleton has also announced earlier that they have been planning to launch their Moto 360 Android Wear watch in China. The latest gadget from Android is said to be set heavily on Google's apps and services, making it look like Google is really preparing to go big being back in China's arms and all.

So far, there is no specific date given as to when Google will really be bringing its services back in China. There are no other dates given as to the launch of its Moto 360 Android Wear watch too. The move has to be carefully planned by the tech giant. Its also needs to market it restlessly if it wants to make its presence known in a country where it is almost impossible to succeed.
