'Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness' Review: Sci-fi JRPG Game Disappoints Critics, Did Not Live Up To The Hype
Jazz Rosin"Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness," the highly anticipated sequel to the epic sci-fi Japanese RPG franchise, has left critics disappointed, getting average reviews on its first day of release.
Here's what the game sites have to say about the latest "Star Ocean" title.
Destructoid - 6 out of 10
The game news site Destructoid gave "Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness" a fairly average score. The site criticized the old-school save point system and the inability to skip through dialogues, which makes it difficult especially when repeating boss fights.
The site praised its beautiful scenery and smooth battle system. Even with seven characters all joining in on the battle, it still does not feel chaotic. The game is a standard JRPG and a completely new experience at the same time, and will still be a fairly acceptable game for fans of th genre.
Polygon - 5 out of 10
Polygon gave the JRPG game an even lower score, saying that the game has a lot of potential, but ended up being an "underwhelming, underdeveloped game."
The earth map, Faykreed, is really smaller than expected, with only five small cities and a handful of different environment types. Going into space does not expand the map, it just puts you right back to Faykreed.
While the premise of a wider sci-fi universe is appealing, the "Star Ocean" title "failed to deliver on any of its promises".
Gamespot - 5 out of 10
"Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness was called mediocre in Gamespot's standards. While the battles are praised for its beautiful execution and enjoyable layer of strategy, this does not make up for the shortcomings of the game.
Gamespot criticized the game for its shallow, cliched characters, with "no emotional payoff in character development or narrative." The story feels "bloated and empty," and clung too much to its generic JRPG roots, which now feels "dated and out of touch."
"Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness" is out now for the Playstation 4. Check out more reviews on Metacritic.
