'Mafia III' and 'GTA V': Other Great Crime-Themed Games That You Might Have Missed

C. de Lacy

Popular games like "GTA V" and the upcoming "Mafia III" are great crime sims where players get to be their own crime lords in an open-world city. But are there other games that players should also check out?

"GTA V" was one of the greatest open-world crime-themed game, and "Mafia III" may follow its footsteps successfully this time, but there are hidden gems worth checking out once players finishes "Mafia III" or get all what it has to offer:

Scarface: The World Is Yours (PC, PS2, Xbox and Wii)

The supposedly sequel to the 1983 movie "Scarface." This game is strikingly similar with the GTA series, but with way better gunplay in its time as "GTA III" and "San Andres" didn't have that oomph yet with its clunky-feeling gunfights at certain occasions.

It has a very interesting story and there are lots of activities to do like being a petty drug dealer who sells coke on the streets up being a member in the big games and doing "heists."

The console versions of the game received great reviews, while the PC version was a mess. We highly suggest the use of emulators such as "Dolphin" or "PCSX2" provided that players still have the physical disc.

Bully (PC, Xbox360 and Wii)

Another game that you might have missed is "Bully." It's a game that takes the same roots from "GTA," given that it is made by the same publisher Rockstar Games.

Its an open-world game where players get to take the role of James "Jimmy" Hopkins and rise through the ranks of the school groups like the Nerds, Preppies, Greasers etc.

Not exactly a crime-game, but it is just as enjoyable and really does feel like a slightly toned down GTA in all regards.

The Godfather (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

Possibly an inspiration for the "Mafia" series. "The Godfather" series is another open-world action adventure game that takes players in the shoes of Johhny Trapani. A low-ranking member of the Corleone family.

The game is extremely true to its movie counterpart and even showcases familiar face, but some critics rated the game down due to recycled textures, but the game was just as enjoyable as expected especially for the fans who have seen the movie.

Other honorable mentions are games like "Saints Row" series, "True Crime," "L.A Noire," and "Just Cause" series. All these games are worth checking out if you're into open-world crime-spree madness like "GTA V" and the upcoming "Mafia III."
