There is still no clear word whether the science fiction mystery television series "Wayward Pines" is going to get its season 3 on Fox. However, fans are still holding on to hopes that they get to see the series return, especially after author Blake Crouch said that the storyline is now already set.

"Wayward Pines" first season was based on a trilogy of books and was co-executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Intendedas a 10-part "event series," its ratings quickly rose to TV fame, so Fox renewed it for a second season.

"In the first season, the star was Wayward Pines, and you can get away with this opaqueness of trying to find out what's happening," Jason Patric, who debuted in the second season said.

"I think, instead of dealing with the mystery and surprise, it's much more with the tension and emotion of people in this setting and what would they do," he added.

Crouch hinted that the new season might focus on the Abbies, humans who survived the cryo-suspension, and it is also speculated that many of the characters may die.

In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Crouch revealed that "Wayward Pines" would always revolve around the idea of man knowing that the end is near, which gives them more material to work on, despite the book's limited source.

"One of things that we kept coming back to was this idea of man facing his own extinction. What does that look like? Mankind would be the first self-aware species to go extinct," the author said.

"The idea that man knows he is in the sunset of his species is fascinating material to play in. And I think in a way, we push through season 2 to get to have that discussion in a potential season 3," Crouch continued. "It's a bunch of really profound philosophical questions just about the nature of being, and so that's the space we could play in."

Meanwhile, no official word from Fox about the renewal has been released yet, but according to CEO Dana Warden, the series is already more or less confirmed that "Wayward Pines" season 3 is going on as planned.

"Wayward Pines" season 3 is expected to premiere at a midseason reportedly scheduled in 2017, if Fox will renew its next installment.
