'Wayward Pines' Season 3 Cancelled After Low Ratings And 'Stranger Things' Hit? Fox Still Uncertain On Release Date

Four months after "Wayward Pines" Season 2 concluded, rumors are emerging that Season 3 might be cancelled as it cannot stand against the psychological thriller "Stranger Things." Fox reportedly confirmed that "Wayward Pines" Season 3 cancellation rumors are not true.

It was reported that the reason behind the third installment's delay is the show's low viewership ranking. Since its fate will largely depend on ratings, the low viewership turnout of Season 2 threatens to risk the third season's renewal.

Moreover, it has been noted that the rating comparison of the "Wayward Pines" Season 1 that garnered over 3.8 million viewers, while the second season only settled to 2.4 million. Nonetheless, Season 2 regained with the DVR ratings which helped increased the rate to 3.5 million.

According to one article posted, the ratings have decreased since the series inception, but not enough to cancel a show.

"I definitely think there could be a Season 3," Fox Television Group co-chairman/CEO Dana Walden said about the possibility of "Wayward Pines" Season 3, as per TVLine.

According to Walden, the show's producers have already shared their ideas. She even added that "Wayward Pines" is still the "number one scripted show of the summer."

Executive Producer M. Night Shyamalan and "Wayward Pines" author Blake Crouch already shared their thoughts with the CEO. The CEO admitted that the network's top executives are still deciding whether or not they will pursue another season.

As of now, Fox has yet to confirm "Wayward Pines" Season 3.
