GoPro Hero5 Black vs Hero4 Black Review: Is The Upgrade Worth It This Holiday?

C. de Lacy

If there's any perfect time to get an action camera, it would be this holiday season as weekends will be longer and family outings are just at bay. With the GoPro brand, it only boils down to either GoPro Hero5 or Hero4 and their black variants. But which one fits people's actual needs?

Below, we outline the major differences between the former GoPro Hero 4 Black and the newcomer Hero5 Black. This will help anybody looking to justify if the newest model is the better choice or if the Hero4 is still more worth checking out.

Sensor

Both the Hero5 and Hero4 have the capability of capturing 12-megapixel stills, but in terms of videos, the Hero5 has, but a small advantage. It can capture 4k footage on varied framerates, but the Hero4 is also capable of doing this. If anybody is shopping for a 4K camera and particularly looking at GoPro's models, these two offers almost the same feats.

60 fps can also be captured with resolutions up to 2.7K and goes beyond it on 1080p.

One significant difference between the two is the low-light sensitivity as the Hero5 can handle darker settings better than Hero4. Still, this would only apply for rare shots where the Hero cameras are used for.

Features

Among the best features that put the Hero5 ahead of the game are its built-in LCD screen, touchscreen features, and voice control increased waterproof capability. The Hero4 lacks some of these features and still relies on a separate device for live-view monitoring.

Price

At the moment, the GoPro Hero4 Black is priced at $349.99 at B&H Photos, while the GoPro Hero5 starts at $399.99. For no more than $50, consumers can get some of GoPro's latest offerings. However, it should be noted that the Hero4 isn't bad at all as it is also a very capable action camera on its own.
