Was 'Battleborn' Day Enough To Save The Game, Or Should It Finally Be Free To Play?
J RoseDespite the best efforts made by its dedicated fanbase, it looks like a bigger push is needed to keep Gearbox Software's team-based shooter "Battleborn" afloat.
According to Kotaku, 2K Games' "Overwatch" competitor still was not able to lure a lot of players to the game during its fan-led event dubbed as "Battleborn Day," which was held last weekend.
While the said event was able to entice new players to join the battle, the number of concurrent players only peaked at 709, according to Steam DB.
Still, it's an impressive number if you compare it to the usual player peak in this game, which rarely goes past the 400 mark, so credit still goes to the event organizers for pretty much achieving the goal of "Battleborn Day."
Unfortunately, the peak did not last. After the weekend, the game went back to having less than 300 player peaks per day, according to this week's SteamDB stats.
Over at Reddit, some players, both veteran and newcomers, speculate that while the surge in new "Battleborn" players is an achievement on its own, most are seemingly driven away by the poor matchmaking in the game.
"Battleborn" has suffered from lack of PC players since its fiercest competitor "Overwatch" came into the picture. The game enjoyed a 12,070 all-time peak on Steam immediately after launch, but is now just barely reaching 300 player peaks.
"Battleborn" was also met with mixed reviews from critics and players alike, getting only 69 out of 100 on Metacritic for the PC version of the game, and also getting low scores for both PS4 and Xbox One versions.
"Battleborn" was also marked down from $60 at launch to a measly $36 on Steam for a certain period, only three weeks after release, VG24/7 reported. It is now back to its $59.99 price tag on Steam.
Some fans voiced out that the game would have a better chance of survival if it is free to play, but Gearbox's Randy Pitchford has already slammed this idea in September.
"I was just told about a reckless story about 'Battleborn' going F2P that is false," Pitchford said on his Twitter page. "There are no plans to convert 'Battleborn' free to play."
