Is The 4G Coverage In The UK Worse Than In Romania, Albania, And Peru?
Cris Xander JulianoAround 80% of the buildings in rural areas in the United Kingdom do not have 4G data coverage. Roads are often dead spots for 4G coverage, where only less than 10% of A and B roads are covered.
According to The Guardian, the UK scores worse than 53 countries in terms of measuring how much time a person's mobile is connected to 4G data. Globally, the country ranks 29th for both average speed and 4G data coverage.
Commission Chairman Andrew Adonis stated, "Britain is 54th in the world for 4G coverage, and the typical user can only access 4G barely half the time". Adonis also said that the country's 4G network is worse than Romania, Albania, Panama, and Peru.
Unfortunately, shifting frequency bands will not suffice to totally improve the connection. There are problems plaguing the construction of additional masts in the country, which includes locations where landowners sometimes opt to deny construction or charge high fees.
Having 5G connections may also seem like to be the only way to improve the speed dramatically, but it is not the solution either; there are still limited frequency bands and location of masts around the country.
So, how will UK improve its 4G connectivity? A more low-frequency spectrum is being proposed, which is deemed excellent in providing wider coverage. Europe freeing up the 700MHz band utilized for digital TV may also contribute to its improvement.
Grant Shapps, who leads the British Infrastructure Group of MPs, stated that this report should call the attention of the government, reasoning that the latter spent too much time listening to excuses from mobile phone operators about lackluster signals. Aside from that, it pretty much confirmed what others have been saying for a long time. "Over the years, ministers have been far too easy on the glib promises given by the telecoms providers and I think that has been combined with ineffective and weak regulation from Ofcom," he added.
