Mobile Games Yield Unprecedented Success In Global Interactive Entertainment Market; Rake Over $41B In Revenue
Jun PasayloPokémon Go, Clash Royale, and Monster Strike lead the mobile gaming platform in raking an unprecedented $41 billion earnings in the gaming market for 2016. The mobile game industry accumulated over 45 percent of the $91 billion revenue in the entire interactive entertainment market around the globe.
On the frontline of the industry's success are Niantic's Pokémon Go, Supercell's Clash Royale, and Mixi's Monster Strike. Pokémon Go was able to generate around $788 million in revenue on its own. According to a SuperData report, this progress signals the interactive gaming market's maturity in accepting the mobile games platform, which now requires higher production values and marketing expenditures.
This year is probably the golden era of mobile games and it is expected to grow more in the coming years. The mobile gaming industry surpassed other areas including free-to-play PC games ($35.8B), consoles ($6.6B), vidoe games (4.4B), virtual reality games, ($2.7B) and eSports ($0.9B).
The free-to-play PC games are most popular among Asian users with a $12.5 billion revenue. It was followed by Europe (2.8 billion), North America (2.2 billion), and Latin America (0.9B). The top five titles of the most sought-after free-to-play PC games include League of Legends, Dungeon Fighter Challenge, Crossfire, World of Tanks, and DotA 2.
Their popularity was attributed to their downloadable titles online. SuperData also stated that the vast market of interactive games is growing at a tremendous rate with the incorporation of new media. eSports has also gained steam with publishers, TV executives, and advertisers casting their stakes to its potential. This string of investments has built the segment's momentum for eSports. It is expected to exponentially grow in the coming years as well, with NBA teams such as Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards.
Famous football clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are now creating their own e-Sports division.
