The Pirate Bay Dubbed As Biggest Torrent Site For 2017; Authorities Turn Down Offer To Help Catch Child Pornographers
Athena DeeThe Pirate Bay has just been announced as the biggest torrent site of 2017. This is in the wake of the news that several globally popular torrent websites have been shut down.
Topping the list means that majority of Internet users who are looking to download illegal content are visiting The Pirate Bay. Multiple news outlets have pointed out that TPB only got the top spot after Kickass Torrents was forced to shut down last year.
The latter torrent site had more than one million visitors on a regular basis. With that many people logging into their page, Kickass Torrents was comfortably the most popular file sharing source that allowed multiple people to share just about all forms of media. However, after it was removed from the Internet just last year, The Pirate Bay was quick to jump in.
Copyright holders have been hounding The Pirate Bay, treating it as a website that has no respect for the law. However, it has been revealed that the website has actually once offered to help catch child pornographers, but they were reportedly turned down.
Tobias Andersson, a spokesperson for The Pirate bay, shared that there was a time when TPB offered to catch child molesters and sex offenders. "I told [the police] how they [TPB staff] could see the IP addresses," he said. "They were not at all interested."
The Pirate Bay staff was equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to track down site visitors who keep posting the child pornography material. However, authorities only wanted them to get rid of abuse-related keywords.
"Our skilled moderators routinely deleted everything that could be suspected to be child porn," Andersson added. "But, still, people tried to post it again. I wanted to explain to the police that we could easily identify most of the stuff being posted. They were totally uninterested."
