Apple AirPods Have Upped Wireless Headphone Sales Like Never Before; 75% Of All Headphones Sold In December 2016 Were Wireless
Staff ReporterThe wireless headphone growth has seen a steady growth in the past two years and Apple AirPods are becoming insanely popular. The premier of the AirPods marked the biggest headphone sales day in 2016. When the Apple AirPods launched in December 2016, wireless headphone sales started increasing. It has been reported that 75 percent of all headphones sold in December were wireless ones.
According to Slice Intelligence, on Dec. 13, 2016, the day Apple launched its AirPods, spending on headphones was ten times more than the pre-holiday average for 2016. Since the launch, the AirPods have remained at the top of the wireless headphones list and has gained 26 percent of wireless headphone spending. Interestingly, 85 percent of those who bought the Apple AirPods since launch were male.
Thus, it is clear from the data that Apple AirPods had a major impact on the wireless headphone market. Meanwhile, tech experts are of the opinion that Apple's decision to drop the 3.5mm headphone jack will have an immense impact on the tech industry. It could even mean the end of the 3.5mm headphone jack and other such wired headphones altogether.
"What might happen is that handsets that have headphone jacks might be considered antiques. Especially once competitors' models start appearing without headphone jacks," Managing Director of Telsyte, Foad Fadaghi, told the ABC.
Since the Walkman, the 3.5mm headphone jack became the industry standard and now Apple is thinking otherwise. It has the power, the technological advantage and a massive fan base to drive a change in the market. This is very typical of Apple where it popularizes a technology, like the Apple AirPods, with its sheer ability to reach a massive customer base.
Thus, even though many brands are still sticking to the 3.5mm headphone jack, they will eventually do away with it. Stay tuned on Mobile & Apps for more information on the Apple AirPods.
