Google Nexus 7 Getting OnLive Universal Controller Support

Tim Frederick

Google Nexus 7 users are about to get the final piece to the OnLive gaming puzzle that will allow them to fully enjoy console quality titles on their Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Nexus 7's, with the preferred tool of the console trade, the controller, finally at their disposal.

OnLive's Android and iOS app (which, by the way, is free) allows OnLive subscribers to play any of their favorite games offered by the cloud gaming service on their mobile device. Heck, they even went to the trouble of tweaking some of the games, including L.A Noire, to give them enhanced touch based controls.

But let's be honest, touch based controls aren't entirely ideal for controlling games that require multiple actions to be performed at once in the midst of hectic gameplay; ok, they aren't ideal in the slightest. They also clutter up the screen with virtual d-pads and virtual buttons that take away from the virtual action on the virtual screen.

That's where OnLive's Universal Controller comes in. The wireless controller can sync with the Nexus 7 via Bluetooth and allow the controlling of those glorious games that shouldn't be possible to control on a tablet, with said Universal Controller. That is, if there was current support for the device, which there isn't. But, it's coming.

In a short response issued to GottaBeMobile on the question of controller support for OnLive's app on Nexus 7, OnLive stated that, "We don't have support out for it yet, but we hope to shortly." Shortly of course is hardly specific, but one (or two, or three) can hope that it means, well, shortly.

In the meantime, some games do already work with the controller pre-official support, so if you have plans to pick it up once support is enabled, you may as well do so now and see if your game of choice already functions adequately (just don't blame me if official support doesn't come quite so shortly after all; or never for that matter).

Which OnLive games are you most looking forward to trying on your Nexus 7 with the OnLive controller? Or will you shun the controller and claim mastery of all games using the touch controls, and nothing but the touch controls? Control your thoughts and share them in the comments below.
