WhatsApp Users Beware of Malware! Free Internet Data Offer A Scam
Louise BonquinWhatsApp users should beware as a new scheme that aims to scam people has emerged. The modus involves requesting the app users to forward a certain message to 13 friends in order to enjoy free internet for the messenger. Forwarding the message to a five groups will also work to get the free data.
Tech Times shared the circulating message and it reads: "You can already get Internet Free Without WI-FI with WhatsApp, and it is by means of invitations, here I give you an invitation."
As can be seen, the message is poorly written and this is due to the fact that it has been translated to a language depending on which one is detected in the settings on the users' browser. The message has a link that will redirect users to a fake WhatsApp page or a number of other malicious sites.
Based on the warning posted by WeLiveSecurity page, once redirected, the users are prompted to subscribe to costly SMS services or accept third-party apps installation on their device. Since this is a scam scheme, all of these actions are designed with the purpose of getting money from users and will go to the swindlers' pockets.
Then again, for techie people, they will easily know that this is a scam. The racket is rather senseless to begin with since WhatsApp cannot provide free data. It should be noted that the messenger is an application and not a service provider so the claim in the message is ludicrous.
WhatsApp already knows about the fraud that used its name to cheat people. Most of all, the company is aware that the scam messages were able to get through despite being circulated in a secured platform.
For this, via its website, the WhatsApp support team assured users that they are already working to stop the crooked deal by saying, "We work diligently to reduce any spam messages that come through our system. Creating a safe space for users to communicate with one another is a priority.
