A few photos of the Xbox 720 developer kit made its way online, adding fuel to some of the rumors regarding Microsoft's new console. The images were first spotted at the Assembler Games forums. However, they were met with much skeptism, only to be proven real by Digital Foundry. Developers, who were spoken to by the boys over at Digital Foundry, confirmed the images are real. So saddle up, boys and girls, 2013 is the year of the Xbox 720.
Images also showed the rumored codename of the device, Durango. We also understand the specs contains parts of a standard PC, which should be a joy for developers who are not down for learning a new architect. We strongly believe gaming consoles, especially the Xbox, will soon become nothing more than a personal computer in the long run. The day will come when Windows will be the central operating system of an Xbox console, it might not happen with the Xbox 720, but more than likely, it will happen with the one that comes after.
What is interesting however, is the claim of how much RAM is in the developer kit. DaE, the person who leaked the images, chatted about the anonymous black box having 8GB RAM, and an Intel CPU. An Intel CPU in the Xbox 720 will definitely make it one powerful machine, and more akin to a PC than anything else.
When it comes to the GPU behind the games, we're not certain what is to be expected. Rumors suggested an AMD Radeon based GPU that is similar to the 6670 at the helm. If such is the case, current gaming PC setups are already far powerful than the Xbox 720, so let's hope this rumor about the GPU is as false as they come.
The Xbox 360 is the currently the number one selling console in the United States and worldwide. If Microsoft keeps this trend going, we could see the Xbox 720 experiencing similar results because we doubt the Wii U and the PS4 are up to the challenge of dethroning the new king of consoles.
