Apple Is Reportedly Ditching Its Fingerprint Reader For Facial Recognition
Athena DeeApple just may be reinventing one of the iPhone’s key features. According to a recent tip, the upcoming iPhone variant will not feature a fingerprint reader.
Ming-Chi Kuo, a known tech tipster from KGI Securities, has revealed that Apple’s future iPhones - not necessarily the upcoming iPhone 8 - will no longer have a fingerprint sensor. Instead, the unit will have a different type of technology to recognize its user. The upcoming iPhone will not just have iris recognition, but will use facial recognition.
In today’s tech industry, facial recognition is one feature that is not exactly new. However, it will have to be at a really advanced level if the Cupertino-based tech giant is thinking ditching the fingerprint sensor entirely.
This feature must be able to adapt to different environmental conditions as well. For instance, iPhone users should not have to type in their password just because it is too dark and their faces cannot be recognized.
Also, the iPhone’s facial recognition feature must have the capability to avoid getting fooled by a photo. Samsung has one up when it comes to this particular department. Galaxy S IIs have a facial security feature that will require the user to blink before the Face Unlock screen is bypassed. This way, other people cannot fool the feature by using a photo of the device’s owner.
For Apple to be successful in giving upcoming iPhone models, such as the iPhone 8, a completely bezel-less appeal, the sensor must sit under the screen. That said, it is expected that the device will have an all-new optical sensor. According to Kuo, the development is already underway. However, he did point out that the it is still in its early stages and may not be ready in time for the iPhone 8 release date - or whatever iPhone model Apple is releasing in 2017.
