'Resident Evil 7: Biohazard' Review: Gamers say Its ‘Terrifying’ But ‘Disappointing’
S. TurlaReviews for Capcom's "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" are starting to pour in. While not everyone is loving the survival horror franchise's switch to a first-person perspective, a lot of gamers acknowledge the fact that the seventh entry in the "Resident Evil" series is a solid title.
According to Kyle Durant of Pure PlayStation, Capcom's latest efforts at winning back the "Resident Evil" have mostly failed, citing "Operation Raccoon City" and "Umbrella Corp" as examples. Unlike the other games with protagonists who are capable of dealing with zombies and other threats, "Resident Evil 7's " Ethan is an ordinary man who decides to look for his wife who went missing three years ago.
In his search, he stumbles upon the bizarre Baker family. However, not all is lost as at least one Baker family member is willing to help Ethan survive this nightmare. Gamers are then tasked with figuring out how the strange disappearance and the Baker family fit into the world of "Resident Evil."
Durant shares that "traditional zombies" are absent in RE7, and that "the Baker family act like something from classic horror movies." They don't actively try to prevent you from escaping because they know it's impossible, but "they'll harm you in ways you'd never expect, and they offer some of the best boss scenarios in recent Resident Evil memory."
The Pure PlayStation review gives RE7 a 9/10 rating, concluding that "Resident Evil 7 didn't just take the series back to form, it perfected it."
Meanwhile, Charlie Oakley from ThisGenGaming had different comments for RE7. In the review, Oakley stated that while the game had both positive and negative points, he is not eager to play RE8 if it is too much like RE7.
While not as similar to the first ever entries in the franchise, none of which were released with a first-person view gameplay, "Resident Evil 7 is much slower than the action filled 4,5 and 6 with enemies not being a frequent challenge and in place of that is more puzzle solving and backtracking which is classic Resident Evil." Oakley added that as a fan of the older RE games, he appreciates Capcom's efforts of "going back to their roots."
ThisGenGaming gave "Resident Evil 7" a 7.5/10 rating. Oakley concludes his review by saying that "Resident Evil 7 is a much better Resident Evil game compared to Resident Evil 6 but it's not this generations Resident Evil 4."
