Angry Birds 'Back to School' Update Will Have Players Blowing Bubbles

Jonathan Charles

As summer draws to a close, kids prepare to return to school. Angry Birds Seasons, the series of themed expansion packs to the popular game, continues to offer new themed features. The new update, called "Back to School," includes a pink angry bird that can spout bubbles.

The teaser trailer below shows a pink bird using bubbles to trick pigs into thinking that the bubbles are eggs, leading the pigs off the edge of a cliff. Angry Birds is fundamentally a tower defense game, so it remains to be seen whether the pink bird fits into existing levels or has specific content designed for it. Other birds include yellow blue-winged birds, which allow players to hone in on pigs or fire three birds across the screen.

Rovio launched Angry Birds Space earlier in 2012 as a full-fledged sequel to Angry Birds rather the expansion packs Seasons offers. Angry Birds Space is based on the mechanic of flinging birds into the gravitational pull of a planet, rather than a simple arc as in the original Angry Birds.

Surprisingly, Rovio has not moved to bring Angry Birds to console, perhaps out of respect for the game's mobile roots. While the regular Angry Birds experience is feasible on consoles, the constant expansion is not ideal for Xbox Live, where updates have to go through certification. Steam might be an ideal platform.

Rovio also recently launched a new title, the puzzle game Amazing Alex. Consumers may wonder if Rovio can maintain the level of quality Angry Birds provided.

Angry Birds Seasons "Back to School" does not have a release date, but consumers can expect a release sooner rather than later as kids return to school. Angry Birds Season is available now for $0.99 and $2.99 for regular and HD versions, respectively. Seasons is usually free to buyers of the core Angry Birds game.
