No Boost Mode in PlayStation 4 Firmware 4.50; Features 8TB External HDD & PSVR Blu-Ray Support Instead

PlayStation 4 owners who were able to test the beta firmware might be heartbroken after the final release for firmware 4.50 had the Boost Mode removed. This feature already received a nickname "Beast Mode" and is supposedly the single most-anticipated feature that has direct impact over gaming performance.

PlayStation 4 firmware 4.50 originally included the Boost Mode in beta to enhance framerate. Had it been included in the final firmware, players can turn on the feature to catapult the performance for games like "Assassin's Creed: Unity" and "Bloodborne." Even those games that were unsatisfactory like "Just Cause 3" had a discernable improvement in beta.

PlayStation Universe reported that the Boost Mode is absent in the final PS4 4.50 firmware update because of technical issues. Games have their locked caps for framerates to ensure proper frame pacing. Take for example "The Witcher 3" which could suffer from staggers when pushed up to 60fps all of a sudden. Simply put, Boost Mode is helpful only when games themselves warrant their framerate.

Meanwhile, not everything is lost for 4.50 PlayStation 4 firmware. Sony will still add support for up to 8TB external HDD and PSVR-compatible 3D Blu-ray playback.

Xbox One has a long taunted external HDD support advantage over PlayStation 4, but not anymore with firmware 4.50 "Sasuke" update, VG24/7 said. Players with relatively small 500GB internal capacity can finally expand to 8TB max and dump contents through USB 3.0-supported HDDs. An added feature for this support is being able to directly download and install contents on the external disk. Even those who are already in the internal HDD can migrate to the new external storage.

Finally, PSVR owners can find new use for their headset as PlayStation 4.50 firmware allows 3D Blu-ray playback. Since 3D TV sets did not really materialize in the market as expected, PSVR is the next option to watch 3D contents. The firmware also compliments with apps that are already in the PlayStation Store, including 360-degree video support.
