CJ EstimadaAs part of their research into human behavior modeling, the team at the Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California found out an interesting trend on who cashes in the most on in-apps purchases. An astounding number of Apple's App store purchases are propelled by a small fraction of users who are making in-app purchases on their iPhones and iPads. These purchases are for more virtual coins in "Clash of Clans" or lives in "Candy Crush Saga."
The Big Spenders And The Determining Factors
Buzzfeed reports that there are two distinctive determining factors in the purchasing inclination Nationality and gender. Among the big spenders, according to the study, Scandinavia, particularly Norway, has the highest concentration.
Greeks, Turks, and Romanians are also noted to fall in the category. For years, the apps these people spends most money on are ad "Clash of Clans," and "Candy Crush Saga." Americans are not inclined to to making in-app purchases, but the North Dakotan are likely included in the list.
As with gender, 55 percent are men and 45 percent are women. Apart from Supercell's "Clash of Clans," men greatly preferred two more war games, Machine Zone's "Game Of War," and "Boom Beach," also from Supercell. While women, favored King's sweet and delicious, "Candy Crush Saga," and farming game, "Hayday" from Supercell.
The researchers found noteworthy differences in spending between younger and older users, as well. Younger users have a preference to social networking apps, photo, and games, while older users are spending more on business apps, food, weather, and travel.
Top In-App Companies
"It is very difficult to make money as an app designer. App-making is a gold mine, but for the very few," said Kristina Lerman, senior author and a project leader at the Information Sciences Institute, in a report by Phys.org. Nevertheless, Supercell seems to have optimized in-app purchases, but King brought in 330 percent more purchases in "Candy Crush Saga" than in "Clash Of Clans." However, the amount per transaction for the latter are much higher, garnering 210 percent more revenue for the war game.
